And then you're dead.
When sixteen-year-old Kaelyn lets her best friend leave for school without saying goodbye, she never dreams that she might not see him again. But then a strange virus begins to sweep through her small island community, infecting young and old alike. As the dead pile up, the government quarantines the island: no one can leave, and no one can come back.
Those still healthy must fight for the island’s dwindling supplies, or lose all chance of survival. As everything familiar comes crashing down, Kaelyn joins forces with a former rival and discovers a new love in the midst of heartbreak. When the virus starts to rob her of friends and family, she clings to the belief that there must be a way to save the people she holds dearest.
Because how will she go on if there isn't?
Poignant and dizzying, The Way We Fall is the heart-wrenching story of one girl's bravery and unbeatable spirit as she challenges not just her fears, but her sense of what makes life worth living.
1) How and why have
you started to write? Were there something or someone that gave you an impulse?
I started making up stories, usually using my toys or
characters from TV shows, when I was very young. As soon as I learned how to print, I wanted
to write them down so I could come back to them and share them with other
people. I'm not sure where the impulse
came from! It's just always been a part
of me.
2) Tell me something
about you and your book The Way We Fall.
The main character in THE WAY WE FALL, Kaelyn, is a lot like
I was when I was her age (16). I was shy
and didn't make friends easily, and I loved animals (for a while, I thought I might become a veterinarian).
3) While youre
writing, have you discovered a character that you where developing feelings of
love for? And was there a character that gave you headaches?
I always have to find something about the romantic interests
in my books attractive, or it's hard for me to write about them being
attractive to the other characters! But
I wouldn't say I've ever fallen in love with one. As absorbed as I get in the stories, I always
know they aren't real. :) As for headaches, there are some characters
who take a long time to reveal to me what their real motivations and feelings
are, and that can be very annoying.
4) How have you done
your research for this novel?
I read several books about epidemics and viruses, and also
researched the procedures and other medical factors online. And I traveled to Nova Scotia, where the
novel is set, to see the landscape and the towns first hand.
5) Is there a book
that inspired your writings?
Actually, there are a few!
I wrote about the five books that provided the most inspiration for THE
WAY WE FALL--Stephen King's THE STAND, Carrie Ryan's THE FOREST OF HANDS AND
TEETH, Connie Willis's DOOMSDAY BOOK, Susan Beth Pfeffer's LIFE AS WE KNEW IT,
and Albert Camus's THE PLAGUE--and you can find those posts here (it's the post
for THE PLAGUE and it has links to the other four): http://www.megancrewe.com/blog/?p=1582
6) In the end, would
you like say some words to your fans from Romania?
I'm so grateful for all the support I've gotten from
Romanian readers! I'd like you to know
I'm doing everything I can (which sadly isn't much--authors don't really control
these things) to see the rest of my books published there.
