Excerpt #1 – R rated – Sinful Rewards 1
Voices murmur outside the condo’s door, the sound piercing my delightful daydream. I swing the telescope upward, not wanting to be caught using it. The snippets of conversation drift away.

I don’t relax. If the telescope isn’t in the same spot as it was positioned last night, Cyndi will realize I’ve been using it. She’ll tease me about being a fellow pervert, sharing the story, embellished for more dramatic effect, with her stern serious dad or, worse, with Angel, that snobby friend of hers.

I’ll die. It’ll be worse than being the butt of jokes in high school because that ridicule had been about my clothes and this will center around the part of my soul I’ve always kept hidden. It’ll also be the truth and I won’t be able to deny it. I am a pervert.

I have to return the telescope to where it was positioned. This is the only acceptable solution. I tap the metal tube.

Last night, my man-crazy roommate had been giggling over the new guy in three eleven north. The previous occupant had been a gray-haired, bowtie-wearing tax auditor, his luxurious accommodations supplied by Nicolas. The most exciting thing he ever did was drink his tea on the balcony.

According to Cyndi, the new occupant is a delicious piece of man candy, tattooed, buff, and head-to-toe lickable. He’d been completing arm curls outside and she’d enthusiastically counted his reps, oohing and aahing over his bulging biceps, calling to me to take a look.

I’d resisted that temptation, focusing on making macaroni and cheese for the two of us, the recipe snagged from the diner my mom works in. After we scarfed down dinner with Cyndi licking her plate clean, she left for the club and hasn’t returned.

Three eleven north is the mirror condo to ours. I straighten the telescope. That position looks about right but then, the imitation UGGS I bought in second year college looked about right also. The first time I wore the boots in the rain, the sheepskin fell apart, leaving me barefoot in Economics 201.

Unwilling to risk Cyndi’s friendship on about right, I gaze through the eyepiece. The view consists of rippling golden planes, almost like…

Tanned skin pulled over defined abs.

I blink. It can’t be. I take another look. A perfect pearl of perspiration clings to a puckered scar. The drop elongates more and more, stretching, snapping. It trickles downward, navigating the swells and valleys of a man’s honed torso.

No. I straighten. This is wrong. I shouldn’t watch our sexy neighbor as he stands on his balcony. If anyone catches me…

I glance behind me. There’s no one here to catch me. Cyndi won’t know I looked. The hunk in three eleven north won’t know I looked. I’m not harming anyone.

I bend over and take another peek.

The sunlight casts interesting shadows across his stomach, accentuating the ridges of muscle, the dip of his navel. I dart my tongue over my suddenly dry lips. His skin is marred with silver scars, some round, some slashes, this proof of hard living, of survival, arousing me, tightening my nipples and moistening my pussy.

I shouldn’t lust after him. He’s the wrong kind of man, the leaving kind, too virile and feral to stay in one place for long. I can tell this from his stance, from his brazen exhibitionism. He wants me to look at him, to care for him. I tilt the telescope downward. His hips are slim. More scars are etched along the bones. Fine brown hair trails from his navel to…

My mouth drops open. He’s completely naked.

Excerpt #2 – R rated – Sinful Rewards 1
“You’re a good girl intent on doing the right thing,” Nicolas mocks, his tone implying that the opposite is true. “That deserves a reward, doesn’t it?” This question is also slathered with sarcasm.

He’s angry with me and I don’t know why. My discomfort increases.

“I returned a lost phone.” I slide closer to the door, seeking to put more distance between us. “I don’t need a reward.”

“But you want a reward.” Nicolas’ eyes gleam. “A new purse, perhaps?” He waves his long slender fingers at my purse. “I can give you that.” His gaze drops. “Or would you like new shoes?”

I frown down at my feet. What’s wrong with my shoes?

“Perhaps you’d prefer to have use of my limo and driver,” Nicolas continues, his voice cold and businesslike. “I’m wealthy, Miss Carter. What do you want?”

If he offered me a reward with genuine gratitude, I might allow him to buy me a new purse, but he isn’t happy about making this offer.

“Okay, I’ll tell you what I want.” I cross my arms in front of me, fed up with his bullshit. “The next time someone does something nice for you, I want you to say thank you.”

Nicolas blinks, his eyelashes obscenely thick and long. “Is that all?” His voice is edged with irony.

“No, that isn’t all.” My rage boils over, fed by guilt and disappointment and betrayal. I gave him my loyalty. He should deserve it. Damn it. “Introduce yourself when you call that someone. Ask her when it is convenient to meet with you.”

Nicolas’ eyes widen. He’s shocked I’m talking to him this way. Well, he should brace himself. I’m not done with him yet.

“Don’t make her wait on a street corner as though she’s a two-bit hooker. Pick her up at her workplace.” I glare at him, wondering how I ever found him attractive.

Nicolas smiles and the mystery is solved. The man is drop dead gorgeous. “I was kind of a jerk, wasn’t I?” he admits sheepishly.

“No, you weren’t kind of a jerk.” I won’t let him off that easily. “You were a complete asshole.”

Nicolas stares at me. I meet his gaze squarely, not hiding any of my irritation. His lips twitch. Is he laughing at me? I narrow my eyes even more and his shoulders shake. My fists clench, the temptation to jab him in the eyeballs compounding by the second.

OBSIDIAN LIQUOR by Scarlett Dawn

Daniil peered at me. His stare was a warning. “What were you doing, Ms. Forter?”

So he did know who I was. The jerk had probably followed me after I had bumped him.

I shrugged and went with the semi-truth. “Getting a story.”

“What story might that be?” Stash asked, his gaze roaming me in an assessing way. We had never met before, so this was my first up close and personal with the man.

I shrugged again. “Brent and Cole are big news. Anything that I can put in print that others don’t have is good business.” Sticking to the truth as much as possible was always key when caught snooping. And I was press. They expected it of me.

“Hear anything interesting?” Daniil asked gently.

Instinct had me taking a step back. The man was chilling on a different level. “Nothing I didn’t already know.”

OBSIDIAN SKY by Lara Henley

“I can't believe you're fucking real; I dreamt of you, and that's all you've ever been until now—a dream. I lie here, touching every inch of your body, and I know you're real, but it feels like a dream. I can't believe how fucking perfect you are, baby; that dream has nothing on the reality of you, Are’,” he says as he kisses down the length of my neck. Am I going to do this? Am I going to give myself to him here on this beach?

“I want you so badly. You’re on my mind every second of every day. I know you want to take things slowly but I have to have you now.” He nibbles down my legs and I’m in pure ecstasy.

“You can have whatever you want, Brandon. I’m yours.” I say barely mumbling the words out. “Take me Brandon, I’m yours.

“Fuck, don’t say stuff like that to me. It’s so fucking hot.”

“Take me, Brandon. You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.” Wait what? Did I just say that shit to him?

“What do you mean?” he says, huffing as his lips make their way down to my breasts. The anticipation of his lips is setting my insides on fire.

“Look at me for a sec,” I say, lifting his head from my body. I miss him already. “I saw you, Brandon, in a store when we were kids. I never forgot your eyes for one second. You were with, I’m guessing, your mom and you looked at me like you’d known me for years. Like you peered into my soul and I never forgot you. I’ve been waiting for you ever since, and now, here you are.”

“Fuck, were you dressed in some little weird black dress and a white bonnet thing on?” He asks.

Chapter One

Someone should warn you that move-in day at a college is the last day you should actually try to move into your dorm. I stared down the line of girls waiting to get on the elevators, all of them with stacks of suitcases and boxes and microwave-refrigerator combos, which should have already been in our rooms, but evidently there was a shortage this year. I eyed my own set of suitcases and the line again. I could drag them up the three flights of stairs to the third floor faster than I could get there waiting in that line.

I tilted the heaviest one on its wheels, tossed the second on top, and started for the stairwell door around the corner. There was no line there, surprise-surprise, so I took my time pulling my suitcases through the door and lifting them one step at a time up the stairs. By the time I reached the third floor, my face was dripping with sweat and I found myself wishing I’d taken my parents’ offer to help me move in.

At the time, all I could think about was their sad expressions as they asked me for the hundredth time if I was sure. Sure I wanted to ditch Columbia for the College of Charleston. Sure I wanted to live in a dorm on campus (forget that all freshmen were required to live on campus). Sure I wanted to have a roommate in said dorm instead of living alone. The list went on and on and on. They didn’t understand. I couldn’t live that life anymore. Every part of it brought back memories I couldn’t handle. I needed a change. And not just a change in geography. I needed a complete change—different town, different people, different me.

I needed to be able to grab bananas from the produce section without running into someone who knew and getting that sad look as he or she asked how I was doing. I mean, how did they think I was doing? I hated pity. I hated the long look people gave you and the slow headshake that said poor little you. I knew sadness. It was a longtime friend of mine now. I didn’t need reminders of how closely it clung to me every time I went to the grocery store.

I heaved my suitcase through the third-floor door and glanced around for room numbers. I was 3-F and my roommate was some chick from Gator Town: Gainesville, Florida. I pictured a surfer girl, complete with sun-bleached blond hair and bronzed skin, who used words like totally and awesome as though they were worth gold each time you said them.

I tugged on my UPF 55 shirt, glad that I’d been smart enough to pick up a few. Long sleeves at the beach in August would cause a few looks, and I wasn’t prepared to explain the real reason for them. But with UPF shirts, I could just claim a crazy interest in sun protection. Plus with the tiny shorts I paired with them, I felt sure I could go about without too many questions. Or so I hoped. Thank God my legs weren’t scarred. Otherwise I’d have had to go to college at some snow lift in Colorado, and I hated cold weather.

I reached the hall for rooms 3-A to 3-H. Most of the doors were open, and I tried not to peek inside them as I passed. The hall was completely alive with excitement and commotion. I wondered if it would always be like this or if there were study hours or something. I finally came to the door for 3-F, which was closed, no sounds coming from inside. I grabbed the knob and turned, relieved that Gator-girl wasn’t there yet, until I flicked on the light and heard a grumble from across the room.

“Damn, shut the light. I’m working off a buzz here.”

I turned around to see a guy in the bed on the left side of the room, a white sheet tangled around him, exposing his bare chest. My eyes roamed over him, and for the first time, I understood how Bella could be attracted to Edward’s paleness. This guy’s skin could rival a vampire’s for sure, but instead of looking like it belonged to a hospital patient, it was startlingly creamy with just a hint of a golden undertone. His shaggy brownish-red hair scattered in a mess across the pillow, and although I knew I should ask a myriad of questions, I just found myself staring.

His eyes peeked open and he tossed one of his arms over them to block out the light. “You must be Olivia,” he said, his voice thick from sleep.
I waited. Hot or not, I didn’t know this guy. He could be here to steal my virtue . . . or the virtue I had two years ago, but still.

He climbed out of bed, a pair of low-hanging navy pajama pants with little yellow characters the only thing on his flawless body. I took them in before glancing back at his face. “Tweety Bird?” “Goldfish. It’s an inside joke.”

I nodded. “Ah.”

He brushed his hair out of his eyes. It was the sort of hair you wanted to touch just to see if it felt as perfect as it looked. “So . . .”

“So . . .” I smiled. “Are you going to tell me who you are and why the hell you’re in my dorm room?”

He smirked. “I see you’re not as small town as you look. Where are you from?” He reached behind him for a T-shirt thrown across a desk chair. He had that deep Southern drawl that reminded you of warm syrup on pancakes, slow and delicious and entirely too tempting.

I considered lying, but that would only delay the inevitable. “Westlake,” I said, bracing myself for his reaction. What happened never made national news—thank God—but everyone in a two-state radius knew and felt inclined to ask as soon as they heard where I was from.

He glanced up at me before slipping the shirt on, and I prepared for the question, the change in his tone, but instead he said, “I take it back. You are small town. Rich. But still, small town.”

For a moment, I was too startled to respond. I had yet to meet anyone who heard where I was from and didn’t launch into questions too personal for a friend let alone a stranger. I opened my mouth to remind him that (a) Charleston wasn’t exactly New York City and (b) he still hadn’t answered my question, when the door behind me burst open and a tiny girl rushed in. She had the look of one of those flyers on a cheerleading squad—five-foot nothing, blond hair in loose pigtails that hung over her shoulders, and dressed in just a tank top and jean shorts.

Jean shorts. Trisha. My chest constricted as memories poured in, and I had to take a step back so I could breathe. Trisha hated jean shorts.

“I’m so sorry! So sorry!” the girl said, her tone entirely too high for such a small space. Gator-girl, I presumed. “This isn’t what it looks like.” Then she turned on the guy. “I told you eight a.m. exit, dude. It’s twelve-thirty!”

I started to tell her I didn’t care regardless. I hated that stereotypical bullshit, where guys could hook up with whomever and be cool, but when a girl did the same thing, she was a slut. I decided it wasn’t the time.

The guy shrugged. “What do you want from me? I was drunker than I thought. Happens to the best of us. Besides, look at her. She’s cool with it. Aren’t you?”

Both of their gazes fell on me. “Um . . . should I come back later? I can just . . .” I started for the door when the girl reached out to stop me.

“Don’t go! Please. I’m Kara. And this asshat is Preston Riggs, my best friend. Well, he used to be my best friend.” She glared at him. “He was supposed to be out this morning before you arrived, but clearly”—she motioned to him—“he’s got issues with time. Among other things.”

Preston slid into a pair of Rainbow sandals and ran his hands over his face before stretching his arms out wide. “I take offense. I pride myself on punctuality. If there was ever a—”

“Out. Before I call your mom.”

Preston looked at her. “Like I’m afraid of my—” Kara pulled out her cell, and he threw up his hands. “Okay, okay. I’m gone.” His eyes swept from her to me, giving me a slow once-over, before winking and heading for the door. “Nice meeting you, Small Town.”

And just like that, he was gone.

Roberto

September 2012

Right now the breeze blew cool off the Pacific, but Roberto knew it could shift at any time. Summer had ended, and now the desert winds would start: the Santa Anas, roaring through the mountain passes, heating up as they sank from higher elevations down to the coast, and any flash, even from a power tool, could ignite the canyon. It had been dry for two months straight. He walked to the barn, where the control panel was located, and turned on the sprinklers.

The water sprayed up, catching rainbows as the sun crested the eastern mountains. It hissed, soft and constant, and Roberto couldn’t help thinking of the sound as money draining away. Water was delivered to the orchard via canal, and was expensive. The Rileys had told him many times that the important thing was the health of the trees and lemons, and to protect the land from fire.

He had something even more important to do before his coworkers arrived: make the coastal path more secure. He grabbed a sledgehammer and cut through the grove to the cliff edge. The summer-dry hillsides sloped past the sparkling pool, down in a widening V to the Pacific Ocean. Occasionally hikers crossed Riley land to connect with the Backbone Trail and other hikes in the mountain range. Years back someone had installed stanchions and a chain: a rudimentary fence to remind people the drop was steep, five hundred feet down to the canyon floor.

He tested the posts and found some loosened. Mudslides and temblers made the land unstable. He wished she would stay off this trail entirely, walk the dog through the orchard, where he could better keep an eye on them, or at least use the paths on the inland side of the property. But she seemed to love the ocean. He’d seen her pass this way both mornings since she’d arrived, stopping to stare out to sea while the dog rustled through the chaparral and coastal sage.

He tapped the first post to set his aim, then swung the sledge- hammer overhead, metal connecting with metal with a loud gong. He felt the shock of the impact in the bones of his wrists and shoulders. Moving down the row of stanchions, he drove each one a few inches deeper into the ground until they were solidly embedded. The wind was blowing toward the house. He hoped the sound wouldn’t bother her, but he figured it wouldn’t. She rose early, like him.

EXCERPT

"I was very close to running out the side door and never looking back. Drive straight to the airport and jump on the first available flight out of fucking Virginia.

I had almost talked myself into it when I felt a stirring in the air. It was an intense humming that took my body completely by surprise. The hairs rose up on the back of my neck and I just knew.

She was here.

Maggie.

And just like that, the fuzzy black faded and way and everything clicked into place. My heart thudded into overdrive and my palms started to sweat, so I shoved them into the pockets of my slacks.

Of course she came. I knew she'd be here. And though I tried not to allow myself the hope of seeing her, I couldn't deny that I had longed for it all the same.

And here she was, looking the same, only better. Her dark hair looked shorter and was pulled back in a low ponytail. She wore a black wool coat over a dark green dress. She looked beautiful and perfect and the embodiment of everything I had always craved.

She walked into the church, flanked by her parents. I barely noticed them or the fact that Rachel and Daniel followed close behind. My eyes were only for her. I knew I should go to Ruby. But I couldn't make myself move. I stood there, rooted to the spot, not sure if I wanted Maggie to see me or not, even as I screamed at her in my head to look at me.

Please.

As much as I missed her and dreamed of this moment, I was scared of it. Too much had changed.  Yet after I saw her, my heart and body reacted the same as they always had.  She had been my crutch and now she was something else entirely, a painful reminder of all the ways I had screwed up. But watching my gorgeous girl move through the crowd of people, I only saw the person I had pinned my future on. And that was both exhilarating and terrifying.

Excerpt #1

He stops outside a single storey, whitewashed cottage, and pulls a set of keys out of his jeans pocket. I notice there’s an old blue car parked in the driveway, I guess we’re driving to another town to eat. He’s probably stopping off to pick up his car keys. That’s good, I’d rather go somewhere more lively. He’s standing in the doorway, smiling at me. He gestures for me to go in. “I’ll wait out here for you,” I tell him.

“Why would you want to stand out there all night?”

“I’m only waiting here while you get your car keys,” I say, frowning at him.

He leans against the door frame and folds his arms across his chest. “Pia, I asked you to have dinner with me, I didn’t say I was taking you OUT to dinner.”

I gape at him, my mouth open. What an asshole. I got dressed up for nothing. I starved myself all day for this, which is my own stupid fault, I should have known better. I take a deep breath. “I see. So what delights do I have to look forward to? A frozen microwave meal? Or maybe you’re going to treat me to a take-out.”

He grins, and my hand itches to slap it off his face.

“Do you think I’d give you a frozen ready meal? You might be surprised,” he says.

I snort. “I’m already surprised. I’m surprised I agreed to this date. I’m surprised that I’m even surprised, that you aren’t bothering to take me out.”

He busts up laughing, a deep, throaty laugh, that makes his shoulders shake. His laugh is infectious and his whole face lights up, it’s attractive and it annoys the heck out of me that I think so. He finally stops laughing and gazes at me, his eyes sparkling. “You’re adorable.” He grabs my hand and pulls me inside. My heel catches on the door frame; I lurch forward, and slam into his chest.

I can feel his heartbeat beneath my palms, he smells of spices. I shiver as he strokes his fingertips down my bare arms. This is so embarrassing, I’m sure my face is the colour of a tomato. Why did I wear these stupid heels? “I’m sorry, I tripped,” I mutter, as I finally pluck up the courage to look up at him.

He cocks his head to the side and smirks. “As much as I enjoy you throwing yourself at me, Precious, you might want to wait until after dinner.” Arrgh. I shove him away and step backwards, giving him my most furious glare. As he brushes past me to close the door, he glances down at my feet. “How do you even walk in those things?” His gaze slowly travels up my body, and my skin heats up, as if his eyes were lasers. His hand reaches for me; I hold my breath and stiffen, unsure of where his touch will land. He ruffles my hair. “You’re still tiny, even when you’re wearing stepladders, aren’t you, Pee Aitch.”

I frown at him. “Pee aitch?”

He nods his head. “Yeah, Pia Hamilton, that’s your name, right?”

My mouth forms a thin line. “What’s your surname?”

His eyes shine. “Baker.”

I fold my arms across my chest. “Trey Baker.”

He smiles. “Yeah, that’s right.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Tee Bee, as in, tuberculosis, a nasty disease that you want to get rid of.”

He nibbles at his lip, and then he chuckles. “It’s no use trying to charm me with sweet talk, Precious.” He kicks off his flip flops, leaving them on the hallway floor, then he glances down at my feet again. “Take those things off, before you break your neck.”

Excerpt #2

I’m glad the movie is over; I couldn’t focus with Pia being so near, but not being able to touch her. Pia covers her mouth, and yawns. “Thanks for an awesome evening, Trey. I’m going to bed. I’m exhausted.”

I follow her to my bedroom, and turn on my bedside lamp. She’s standing by my bed; twirling her braid around her finger.

“Let me know if you need anything.” Like me.

Fay comes in, and sits down on my bed. “Can I sit here and talk to you while you go to sleep, Pia? I’m not tired yet,” she says.

Pia nods, so I reluctantly grab a spare blanket and pillow from the top of my closet.

“Sweet dreams,” I say, as I head to the lounge to make up my bed on the sofa. It’s comfortable enough, but I can’t sleep knowing that Pia is in the next room. I want to snuggle up with her. I can’t get her out of my head. It’s like she’s bewitched me or something. I’ve never felt this way about a girl before. I throw the blanket off, sit up and rub my hand through my hair. I heard Fay go into the spare room a little while ago; maybe I can go join Pia. I stop outside my bedroom door, and listen but I can’t hear anything. I’m about to turn the door handle but I stop myself. If she’s asleep it could freak her out if she wakes up and finds me in there. I force myself to go back to the lounge. Luckily I got my ipod out of my room before she went to sleep. I scroll through my song list until I find ‘New tattoo.’ I smile; this song describes how I feel about Pia right now. Feeling thirsty I head to the kitchen to get a glass of water. As I fill the glass I hear movement behind me. I turn, and see Pia. Her hair is loose and messy, and falling around her shoulders. She’s wearing one of my t-shirts, and my gaze falls down to the hem which ends just above her knees. Damn, she looks hot, and she’s so fucking tiny.

“Erm…I’m thirsty, I came to get some water,” she says.

I grin at her. “Me too. Can’t you sleep?”

She shakes her head. I fill a glass with water and hand it to her. She nods towards my ipod which I’ve wedged into the waistband of my sweatpants. “What are you listening to?” I pull my ear buds out and hook her hair behind her ears. Her hair is so soft and silky; I let it run through my fingers before lightly brushing my hand against her cheek. I pop my ear buds into her ears.

She smiles. “I like this; I’ve not heard it before.”

I move closer and rest my hand on the small of her back. “It reminds me of you.”

She starts moving to the music. Although I can’t hear it I know the beat of the song. I slip my hands around her waist, and sway with her. I gaze into her beautiful, brown eyes as my head dips towards hers.

“My kitchen isn’t a brothel.”

My gaze snaps to the kitchen doorway. My mum stands there with her arms folded, glaring at us. “Why don’t you shag your whores in your bedroom like you usually do?”

Pia tugs the ear buds from her ears, and hands them to me. Her face is red, and her gaze is glued to the floor. “I’m sorry,” she mutters.

Mum walks into the kitchen and fills the kettle with water. Pia speeds towards the kitchen door.

“Pia, wait.” She keeps walking, I can’t blame her. I scowl at my mum. “I can’t believe you said that. Pia isn’t a whore.”

Mum switches on the kettle and puts a teabag into her mug. “They are all whores. You bring them here, you fuck them, then you leave them.”

I stare down at the floor. She’s right, that’s what I usually do. “Pia’s different. I like her, and you just upset her.”

AUTHOR BIO

Candy J. Starr used to be a band manager until she realised that the band she managed was so lacking in charisma that they actually sucked the charisma out of any room they played. “Screw you,” she said, leaving them to wallow in obscurity – totally forgetting that they owed her big bucks for video equipment hire.

Candy has filmed and interviewed some big names in the rock business, and a lot of small ones. She’s seen the dirty little secrets that go on in the back rooms of band venues. She’s seen the ugly side of rock and the very pretty one.

But, of course, everything she writes is fiction.

Bad Boy Redemption - Excerpt 1

The cheers going up, the whooping and screaming, ear-drum blasting noise, wasn’t for the headlining band. It wasn’t even for the second support. That lung-fuelled anarchy, rocking the room to the very foundations was for my band - Storm. The guys I managed. Every single person in that huge, sold out venue cried out for one more song, one more moment, a chance to wring out the last drops of magic as though clinging to a lover in the morning light.

This was what fame felt like: rapturous, loud and hungry.

The guys had just done the last song of their set, the reverberations still ringing from the cymbals on Spud’s drum kit, when the tour promoter gestured for them to stay on stage. When you’re the opening band, the first ones up on stage, normally you get to play to a bunch of bored faces of the diehard fans there to mark their territory for the headliners. Most people are still circling around the car park. No one cares about the opening act.

But, since this tour started a few short weeks ago, Storm’s star had blasted through the skies. Through word of mouth and careful promotion, their fame had risen, not in a nice steady curve but exponentially.

As the band travelled from town to town, the number of punters waiting when the doors opened increased and the proportion of bodies in the crowd wearing Storm tee-shirts grew larger. Those people sang along with the guys, knowing all the words and even called out their favourites. Of course, there were no hit songs to scream out because Storm hadn’t even released a song as yet, just a few demo CDs they’d sold at their concerts and some songs available online for download. Angie had told me that the downloads had been going nuts. Not viral, but as close to viral as you can get without actually being viral, is what she said.

And we were about to hit the next level. Right after this gig finished, well maybe after some time for partying and unwinding, they hit the studio to record their first album, the ink still wet on the contract they’d signed.

Back when I’d found out the only asset I’d had in this world was a crappy management company with a few has-beens and a surly, disagreeable rock band on their roster, I’d never dreamed we’d get this far. I’d wanted to get rid of that company as quickly as possible and get some fast cash.

With all the buzz from this tour, the deal I’d struck for the guys had more zeroes than they’d ever thought they’d see and a lot more creative freedom. Those labels who’d not even answered my calls once had wooed me like a superstar. Taking me to dinners and cocktail parties just to put their offers forward. One of them had booked out suites at a fancy hotel for the guys for this final leg of the tour. Another had sent a crate of booze. And one had sent a massive bouquet of flowers.

“Knob jockeys,” Spud had said. “Flowers. Phhht. You can’t eat them, you can’t snort them and you can’t screw them. Who the hell would want some sissy flowers?”

That was Spud for you, though I could see his point for once.

I leaned on a crate at the side of the stage wishing I had Angie beside me. She’d been with me since the start of this adventure. I’d probably had been living in the gutter if it wasn’t for her - pushing me in the right direction and taking over all the promotion. But Angie and her mates were busy filming this gig. Her first fully professional job she’d been offered, because the Monkey Bride team had been so impressed with her efforts with filming at the beginning of the tour.

Jack Colt swaggered off stage. Jack, he never walked, he always swaggered. He’d been a god on stage. His voice had sent shivers through my body the whole night and his hips had moved in a way that made me glow with the knowledge that I’d be the one in his bed tonight. I felt sorry for every other woman in the crowd because they’d just be imagining that it was Jack Colt humping them while I had the real thing.

His sweat-soaked tee-shirt clung to his body, defining every bump of his body and, boy, did that man have some nice bumps. His hair stuck to his face where he’d thrown water over his head to cool himself down and his bottom lip pouted. He locked eye contact with me and my heart pounded louder than the screams of the crowd.

“What are you doing?” yelled the tour promoter. “Get back out there.”

“Hold on a moment,” Jack Colt snapped.

He swept me into his arms, crushing my body against his. His mouth hit mine and my body writhed as emotions swirled through me, lifting me up to my toes. I savoured his bourbon soaked lips. He kissed me hard as though searching for something that would give him the energy to go back on stage. He must have found it because he pulled away as quickly as he’d started. He ripped off his shirt and sprung back on stage. The roar of the crowd intensified.

EXCERPT:

“You sure you’re not sneaking off to Los Angeles to get me a ring?”

He laughed once more. She’d been trying to get it out of him since the night he told her he’d wanted to take her to Vegas for the weekend. Even with her business meeting, she was hunting for clues of a proposal. Only his brother knew he planned to ask her to marry him this weekend. “I’m not going to Los Angeles to get a ring, but even if I were I would never tell you,” he said.

“You do realize that gives absolutely nothing away?”

He nodded, tapping her forehead lightly, then running his finger down to her nose. “I know,” he said, then nibbled on the end of her nose.

“Well, enough about rings. What’s in that box there you’re hiding by your leg?”

“You saw it?”

“My gift-spotting skills know no bounds.”

He handed her the turquoise-wrapped box with a white bow on it. She eyed the bow. “In case you want to tie me up on the plane, looks like we already have something to use.”

His dick twitched against the denim of his jeans. She was always on the same wavelength as he was. “I may need to tie up your hands as a reminder to bring your poker face to the meeting today.”

She gave him a sharp-eyed stare. “Do not ever doubt my poker face. It is masterful,” she said, as she tugged one end of the ribbon, letting the white satiny bow fall across the shiny wrapping paper. Ripping off the paper, she popped open the top of the box, and there it was. That glow in her eyes. The absolute joy in receiving gifts. She was a delight to give presents to because she never faked her appreciation. Reaching inside the box, she wrapped her fingers around the necklace then gently lifted the long strand of pearls. “Oh my God, they’re stunning. They’re so fucking gorgeous.”

She draped the pearls over her hand, the long strands like waterfalls of smooth, rounded beads. She gazed at them like they were precious, a fitting response, since they were. “They’re real,” she said, with wonder in her voice as she looked up at him.

He nodded. “I would never give you something fake.”

“I’ve never had pearls before. I’ve never thought of myself as a pearl person.”

“Then let me show you how I want you to wear them, so you can see how absolutely fucking sexy a pearl person can be,” he said, standing up and making his way to his suitcase. He opened one of the zipper compartments where he’d tucked a dress for her, and brought it over. “Another gift. Put this on.”

“Now?”

He nodded. “Yes. Model it for me.”

“As you wish,” she said, standing up and glancing once at the cockpit. “What about the pilot?”

“I told him we’d be making full use of the plane and he said he’d have his eyes on the sky the whole time.”

“Then keep your eyes on me,” she said, looping the strand around her neck, then stripping off her skirt, letting it pool at her feet, her gaze locked on him the whole time. He watched her, growing harder with each layer she removed—now her shirt, then her lacy bra. He reclined the spacious leather seat, taking in the show, savoring every second of her undressing.
